Helsingbor, Sweden

A hidden gem of Sweden, Helisngborg is the perfect place to spend a day or two while exploring the nearby attractions at a fraction of the cost of Copenhagen. This charming town can serve as a great base for day adventures to castles and historic sites located in the vicinity. Helsingbor boasts an extremely safe and family-friendly environment, making it an ideal destination for travelers with children.

What to do in Helsingborg?

Helsingborg Historic Sites

The best way to see Helsingborg is to walk down the main street. We were there in winter, but any time of season is a great time to explore the city. Keep in mind it can get pretty cold December through Feburary with snow being common.

tips on visiting Helsingborg with a family:

  • Strollers are easy to navigate on the streets. There are walkways and bike paths, so just keep an eye out to stay in the walking lane to avoid bikes.
  • There are plenty of bike and scooter rentals, so if you don’t have a stroller that’s a great option
  • Historic and picture-worthy spots include:
    • Storgorget
    • Karnan
    • Harbour Square
    • Ferry from Helsingborg Central

Kronborg Castle, Copenhagen, Denmark

What is Dunkers Kulturhus

The city's cultural hub is a fantastic destination for kids of all ages. You can easily purchase tickets on site, which will grant you access to multiple art galleries (including one specifically designed for children) and a play and learning area filled with a variety of tactile and educational toys. Depending on your family's interests, I would recommend planning for a visit of 1-2 hours.

tips on visiting Dunkers with a family:

  • Strollers are easy to navigate, and even in the galleries there's space between artworks
  • There are some galleries where kids cannot touch, so talking to a staff member to understand where they are can help prepare your little ones for what’s to come
  • Everyone we encountered were easy to communicate with and had advanced English
  • There is a family bathroom to make things easier

Ferry to Kronborg Slot

If you’re in the area, you shouldn’t leave without seeing the historic Kronborg Slot (Castle), learn more about it HERE. The castle is actually in Denmark, but only a 15-20 minute ferry ride from Helsingborg. To access the Ferry, go to Helsingborg Central Station and follow the signs for the Ferry. You can buy tickets with attendants at the kiosk or the office. We preferred the office since it gave us the chance to ask questions to the clerk and make sure we knew what we were buying.

tips on Kronborg Castle by Ferry:

  • The Ferry runs at least every 30 minutes and is easy to navigate.
  • There are snacks and drinks on the Ferry plus seats to enjoy the view, but they can be taken up quickly, so if that’s what you want you should try to line up early enough to be one of the first ones on
  • There’s an elevator on board and easy stroller navigation

Parks in Helsingborg

Between the historic sites, safe streets, and friendly people, Helisgnbor is an ideal place for families, and they have great parks to impress! We saw families out even on the cold days, bundled, but having fun at the park, so they are a great spot any time of year!

Where to stay

in helsingborg

With its proximity to Central Station, the Radisson Blu Metropol Hotel, Helsingborg was an obvious choice to book for our stay in Sweden, but not just because of the convenience of being near the central station. It’s a hotel that brings luxury and elegance with family practicality. While booking you can choose a room with bunk beds (which our little ones LOVED) and the staff is always ready to help with family-focused activities.

Radisson Blu Metropol Hotel:

Location: Helsingborg, Sweden

Highlight: The Breakfast was AMAZING! They had lots of options from a variety of fresh fruits to freshly made al la carte dishes. We loved the eggs benedict and avocado toast. The waffles were a favorite for the little ones

Family Tip: Get a room with bunk beds! They can be stored away if you don’t need them, making the room options very flexible

Where to eat in Helsingborg

PINCHOS

Location: Helsingborg

Highlight: This restaurant has a fun atmosphere, especially for families, decorated with a circus theme and complete with free popcorn! Everything is served in tapas/ appetizer style, so it is fun to get lots of dishes to try to share

Favorite Dish: Fish and Chips

Family Tip: You order through an app at this restaurant. The staff is very friendly and helpful, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. We were happy to have a local Europe SIM because I’m not sure how you would order without it, they sent a confirmation code over SMS.

Nelly’s Food Ect

Location: Helsingborg

Highlight: Fresh foods with great flavor combinations

Favorite Dish: Fish with Beets

Family Tip: Don’t let the romantic atmosphere of this cute restaurant intimidate you if you’re traveling as a family, everyone is friendly and accommodating of little ones. They change the menu regularly to focus on fresh flavors, but everything we tried was amazing. Bonus, it’s in the Raddison hotel, so extra points for convenience if that’s where you’re staying!
