Winter in Denmark

Winter in Denmark may sound intimidating and cold... especially with a family, but I’m here to tell you it’s a hidden tressure. Between the Christmas markets, Magical Castles, and the world’s (second) oldest amusement park decked out in festive lights, Demark in Winter is a gem. Bonus, if you’re traveling with kids, Denmark is family-friendly.

What to do in Denmark during Winter?

Here are some of the best places to visit in Denmark during winter:

  1. Kronborg Castle
  2. Tivoli
  3. Sight Seeing Tours in Copenhagen
  4. Copenhagen Christmas Markets
  5. Rosenborg Castle

Kronborg Castle

A favorite of tourists and locals alike, Kronborg Castle (Kronborg Slot in Danish), also known as the “Hamlet Castle” is decorated beautifully for Christmas. We were there before the snow fell, but either way, with or without snow, it’s a castle not to miss.

tips on visiting Kronborg Castle with a family:

  • Strollers are allowed in the outdoor areas, but not inside. There’s a stroller park outside, and if your little ones are especially small I would suggest a carrier.
  • There are a few areas that children cannot touch, but most of the collectibles are in cases or roped off, so it’s pretty easy to keep even the most curious ones in check
  • There’s a craft room! In one of the upper rooms in a kid-focused craft room, in late November they already had holiday-inspired crafts where you’re little ones can let lose
  • The Christmas market in the courtyard has food, snacks, and treats, so there’s no worry about anyone going hungry

Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark

tivoli

Another favorite not just for tourists, but locals as well is Tivoli. This is the second oldest amusement park in the world still open today, and its blend of historic charm with modern attractions is one of a kind. It’s a

tradition of many to roam around the park, even if not to ride the rides, but to enjoy the festive lights while getting food and a drink.

tips on visiting Tivoli with a family:

  • Strollers are easy to navigate
  • There are changing stations in the family bathrooms
  • Indoor restaurants are a great place to warm up, as well as the heated sitting areas near the food court (close to the ice rink)
  • There’s a fun play area for younger children (no extra fee) where they could spend at least an hour exploring
  • Dressing warm is the key to success. It’s normal to wear a snowsuit or snow pants and a big jacket, so don’t be shy to dress yourself and the family warm to enjoy for hours.

Tours in Copenhagen

Copenhagen has so many iconic sites, but walking outdoors in the cold can take its toll. We loved the hop-on/off bus as well as the canal boat tour with covered tops as options to stay warm while exploring the city. I booked both with Viator, and love the ease of the app, seeing honest reviews, and getting points for each tour I book that I can use as a discount on my next booking.

tips on Copenhagen Bus tours as a family:

  • Hop on/ Off Bus stops at all the major sites including the Little Mermaid, Amlienborg, and many more! It comes with an audio tour and allows you to get off and on as much as you’d like.
  • There’s a designated area on the bus to park strollers
  • There are maps on the bus and online, with a live map online showing where the buses are for easy navigation

tips on Copenhagen boat tours as a family:

  • Seeing the city from the water provides a whole new perspective! Nyhaven is the main highlight, but there are so many other enchanting sites
  • There’s no room on the canal boat for a stroller, there’s an area at the ticket booth where you board the boat to park your stroller if you’d like
  • There’s some uncovered seating at the front, but most is covered seating. The windows go up in the indoor seating so you can still get great pics from inside

Christmas Market, Copenhagen, Denmark

Christmas Markets

An iconic European Christmas staple, the Christmas Markets. Most open around noon, and get more busy at night when the light display is most attractive. Booths sell anything from cloths to fresh fish cooked over the fire and offer a uniquely European Christmas experience.

tips on Copenhagen Christmas Markets:

  • Everything is modernized, so most all stalls (if not all) take credit cards, although it’s a good idea to have a debit card as backup in case there are issues.
  • Stollers are easy to navigate, even when it gets busy as people are nice and understanding to the families around them
  • English is widely spoken. Even if someone starts speaking in Danish, if you tell them you speak English they will be able to transition for you. We were very impressed at the advanced English of everyone we met.

Rosenborg Castle

Situated in downtown Copenhagen, Rosenborg castle is easy to get to and has a multitude of picture perfect moments.

tips on Rosenborg Castle as a family:

  • There are no backpacks, diaper bags, large bags, or strollers allowed. There are free lockers at the entrance you can use. They provide coins that will give you a key to securely store your items.
  • There are antiques everywhere you turn. It makes an epic scene for photos, but can be difficult for small ones to understand they can’t touch anything. The Rosenborg Castle website suggests keeping the smaller visitors in a front-facing carrier.
  • The many portraits and displays of crown jewels make it a fun destination for children who love princes/ princesses!
  • During the Christmas season, there are children's activities/ facts posted throughout the castle, a few of them included sensory activities which made it especially fun.
